The emerald’s color represents spring’s new growth making it the perfect choice as the birthstone for the month of May. Many cities and locations pay homage to this gemstone such as the "Emerald Isle" in Ireland and Seattle, WA, as the "Emerald City" due to their lush and rich landscapes. Its name comes from the ancient Greek word for green, “smaragdus.” The emerald’s green hue can range from yellowish-green to bluish-green.

The color has soothed souls and excited imaginations since antiquity. Emeralds were once used to restore tired eyes. By looking at the emerald, its soft, green color would comfort and remove weariness. Even today, the color green is known to relieve stress and eye strain.

The emerald is a member of the beryl family ranking among the traditional "big four" heirloom gems along with diamonds, rubies and sapphires.
